Health Technician (Dermatology)

The Medical and Surgery Dermatology Health Tech provides assistance during Dermatology surgical procedures and to Dermatologists during patient consultations/follow-up appointments. As a Medical and Surgery Dermatology Health Tech, you will participate in the planning and implementation of complex procedures under supervision of the dermatology surgery team and by Dermatologists during medical consultation. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Open and prepare exam rooms for patient care assuring rooms are cleaned and organized between patients. Assure supplies and equipment are available prior to surgical procedures. Identify patients who may require special preparation. Prepare, organize, maintain sterile field for dermatology surgery procedures. Prepare sterile surgical field with required items for specified procedure. Handle instruments, supplies and equipment during Dermatology Surgery procedures, ranging from simple to complex. Assist the Dermatology surgeon:
prepping, positioning, prepare skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, cutting sutures. Maintain high fidelity procedure for management of dermatology specimens within the clinic, labeling and prepare dermatology specimens for transfer to pathology department. Plan and discuss procedures with Dermatology surgeons. Triage walk-in patients and incoming calls to the clinic regarding Dermatology patients. Maintain Dermatology surgery suite and medical clinic areas. Assess medical and surgical equipment needs. Maintain supplies and materials. Contact patient prior to surgical visit. Provide patient education and information regarding surgical procedures. Confer with patients regarding follow-up appointments and care plan. Support the Medical Dermatology and Surgery Dermatology Coordinators. Provide phototherapy treatments for patients. Maintain high quality procedures for obtaining surgical images, downloading images from cameras and uploading images into the patient record. Alert providers of schedule/procedure changes. Provide training and mentorship to health techs. Assist coordinators with completion of technical skills and competency validation for health techs. Assist Dermatology in quality improvement activities. Perform other administrative duties as assigned. Work Schedule:

Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the Dermatology surgeon or Dermatologist during minor procedures. Work Environment:
Duties are performed in client patient rooms and surgery suite of the Dermatology division, or, on occasion in facility inpatient rooms. Incumbent requires appropriate scrub attire, including sterile gown and gloves, surgical caps to cover hair, surgical mask to provide an aseptic environment in the surgery suite. Incumbent will wear protective eyewear such as goggles or face shield to prevent inadvertent splash injuries to eyes. Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
knowledge of safety procedures for surgical procedures; knowledge of highly technical medical instrumentation; knowledge of intricate examination or treatment procedures; ability to comfort patients/families, and clearly explain treatment procedures/plans; knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of anatomy and physiology including location and function; knowledge to plan, coordinate, develops facts, and resolve support problems; knowledge of physical exam techniques, to include taking and recording blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, and other related techniques; knowledge of medical record program and the ability to maintain medical records, analyze and audit data, and identify trends and patterns; knowledge of Dermatology surgical treatment procedures; knowledge of and skill in applying an extensive body of rules, regulations, procedures and precedents relating to the physical standards program; maintain safety precautions, universal precautions, and how to implement infection control policies and procedures. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
