This position has primary responsibility to ensure school safety and security, and promote a positive learning environment using student connection, proactive intervention, and restorative practices.
Reports to the designated building administrator(s).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved.
Work closely with building administrators, students, and staff to establish a culturally responsive, anti-racist, inclusive, and positive school culture; Work with students from diverse backgrounds and identities; Use restorative justice practices and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports; Proactively circulate throughout the school building and grounds during the day to create relationships, gain valuable context on student behavior and help support positive school culture; Support students and staff by implementing intervention and restorative practices that support all students' social, emotional and academic success; In conjunction with administration, respond to teacher requests for in-the-moment classroom support; Monitor the school site and grounds to maintain campus safety and security (e.
g.
buildings, parking lots, roadways, athletic fields, and school perimeter areas); Maintain a closed campus, as defined by the building administrator, during the period of school operations; Assist administrators and school staff with keeping unauthorized visitors from buildings, grounds, and hallways of assigned school, and respond to related security issues; Under the direction of school administrators, conduct student investigations and file reports relating to site safety, security and student behavior; Document incidents in a timely and accurate manner; Supervise students during school transition periods, (e.
g.
, lunch, advisory, passing periods, etc.
); May be asked to work additional hours at school events (e.
g.
, athletic events/games, dances, performances, graduation, field trips, etc.
).
Participate as a member of the school safety committee and attend regular safety committee meetings at school and district level; Assist in the development and implementation of current building emergency plans and required drills (e.
g.
fire, earthquake, shelter in place, lockdown, lockout, etc.
); Support administrators in responding to emergencies on the school site; Monitor and enforce parking regulations and provide traffic control as necessary; Support communication with families when students require administrative intervention; Participate in ongoing district and state required school safety and security staff training.
Perform related duties consistent with the job description and the employee assignment.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP Reports to designated building administrator(s) WORKING CONDITIONS Works in a school environment with frequent interruptions; be required to deal with noncompliant, angry, or distraught individuals on a regular basis; exposed to danger to personal safety at times; require to physically restrain students when necessary; required to defuse potentially explosive situations with individuals or large groups; must meet certain deadlines for investigative reports and other forms of documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience High school degree or equivalent; Two years of college credit preferred; Two years of direct experience working with adolescents (e.
g.
, case management, youth development, education); Demonstrated experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities.
Experience with restorative justice practices and/or with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is preferred; Employment is contingent upon continued compliance with state statutes pertaining to school safety and security staff training requirements.
Licenses or Special Requirements Valid Washington State Driver's License; an SLSD Type II driver's license; Current First Aid and CPR card; Possesses the highest standard of ethical and professional conduct.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability and desire to work with students and youth related agencies; Demonstrated use of good judgment; Ability to remain calm and in control of tense situations; Demonstrated effectiveness in verbal and written communications; Demonstrated ability to relate to staff and students in a multi-ethnic (racially diverse) environment; Ability to maintain confidentiality; Knowledge of mental health, trauma, addiction, poverty, and the impacts of oppression on historically marginalized groups; Ability to use Microsoft Office and Google Docs Editors.
Ability to learn to use the school student information system; Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
